Tilt and Turn Windows

  • If you’re struggling to decide on your preferred style of window, tilt and turn windows are an excellent choice. Bring a sense of the outdoors into your home, even during the wetter times of the year.

The most notable feature of tilt and turn windows is they can be opened in two ways. Push the bottom part of the window away from the frame to tilt them open to air a room; thanks to the angle, if it starts to rain (in true British fashion!) you don’t have to worry about the house getting wet. If you prefer, they can tilt open from the top too, which is better for a basement window, though it’s worth remembering you won’t benefit from the same shelter during wet weather.

You can also turn the windows open like a door, as there are hinges on the sides. The mechanism that allows you to open them inwards means your home receives a good source of ventilation. Simply angle tilt and turn windows to regulate how much breeze you would like coming indoors. It’s no surprise that these windows are one of our most popular designs, as you get two opening mechanisms for the price of one.

Are tilt and turn windows secure?

Tilt and turn windows are designed with two locking and opening devices but remain secure and hard-wearing, just like other styles of window we offer. Both locking systems meet the design standards set by the Police Force. Feeling safe in one’s home is paramount and tilt and turn windows are made with this in mind. After our team has installed your new high-quality windows, they will show you how to lock them correctly and answer any questions you might have. Making sure your home is secure is something we take very seriously here at CTG Windows.

How do you use a tilt and turn window?

Tilt and turn windows are adaptable, depending on how much ventilation you would like coming into the house. Tilting the window open doesn’t compromise your security or desire to stay dry, as the mechanism opens it only slightly, preventing intruders from entering. Rain is directed away from the window frame, thanks to the particular opening angle incorporated into the window’s design. On warm sunny days, open the window inwards on its side hinge and take in the cool breeze, ventilating your home’s indoor spaces.

Do tilt and turn windows open inwards or outwards?

Thanks to the two opening mechanisms, tilt and turn windows will open in both directions. Tilt the window outwards to let in light ventilation, whilst being safe in the knowledge that your home is secure and protected from the rain. Should you want a little more breeze entering, open the window inwards on its side hinge. The two ways in which to open the window means you can decide how you would like your windows to open and close.

How big can a tilt and turn window be?

This is entirely up to you! Here at Britannia, our tilt and turn windows are manufactured to fit whatever size you need, for any room in your home. If you wish to purchase a particularly large tilt and turn window (for a ground floor, for example) browse our patio doors, which you may find more suitable. All tilt and turn windows are manufactured in our state-of-the-art factory, based in Clevedon.

How do tilt and turn windows work?

Tilt and turn windows open in two perpendicular directions. One of the window’s hinges is at the top or bottom (whichever you wish), tilting it outwards slightly. The other hinge sits on the side and ensures the door opens inwards, however far you like. Versatile and made to the highest of standards, tilt and turn windows offer two opening options for the price of one and with no compromise on safety and security.

What are the advantages of tilt and turn windows?

We find tilt and turn windows are consistently popular due to the degree of control you have over the ventilation coming in and out of your living spaces. Some window designs only provide the option of tilt opening and others only the side-hinged opening. Tilt and turn windows allow for both. Open and close accordingly, whether it’s a warm sunny day or a day of April showers.
