Are uPVC sash windows any good?
Renowned for being versatile and durable, uPVC didn’t use to be synonymous with being particularly aesthetically pleasing…! It’s now possible to recreate the look of a traditional sash window that looks virtually identical to a classic wooden and newly-painted one, minus the rigorous upkeep.
Whilst wooden frames are known for being high maintenance, uPVC windows require little attention and can be cleaned with ease. The perfect marriage of cost efficiency, easy maintenance and an aesthetic design make uPVC sash windows an excellent choice for your property.
How do you measure a sash window?
Sash window width – measure one side of the window to the other within the box frame, excluding the width of the box that the window sits in
Sash window height – include both sashes when you measure from the top of the window to the bottom. Measure inside the box frame for an accurate measurement of the sash windows themselves
Box frame height – measure the top of your window frame all the way down to the windowsill
Box frame width – this includes the entire window frame

Are uPVC or aluminum windows better?
If you’re after prime insulation levels, uPVC is an excellent choice as it’s known for its thermal efficiency. UPVC is both durable and low maintenance; you’ll easily be able to wash away everyday flecks and marks that show up.
Aluminum is the more costly material of the two choices but is extremely resistant to general wear. Because it’s more robust than uPVC, aluminum frames are thinner, so the glass pane can be larger. This allows for more natural light to pour into your home and makes for better views, as there is a bigger glass surface area.
Can sash windows be double glazed?
uPVC sash windows can be double or triple glazed, ensuring your home stays warm all year round. Each glass layer stops the cold from entering and the compression seal technology ensures no warm air escapes. The layers of glass trap argon gas between them; as this dense gas is a poor conductor of heat, the warm air remains inside your home, improving energy efficiency.
One of the most cost-effective choices available, you can also customise your uPVC sash windows to have a woodgrain finish, giving the look of a traditional wooden sash window, but for a significantly lower price. A beautiful design, a great price and supremely practical, all in one!
How does a sash window work?
Sash windows have two or more panels, which move up and down vertically. Single-hung sash windows have only one moving panel. Should you wish to have more air circulation inside your home, opt for a double-hung window, as this allows you to move both the top and bottom panels.
Sash windows function on a pulley mechanism, with one window on an end of the cord and the other providing counterbalance weight. This means your window won’t immediately close if you were to let the sash go.
Which part of the window is the sash?
The sash is the movable part of the window that comprises of the horizontal and vertical frame holding the glass in position. In the case of a double-hung window, the two sashes move in both directions, whilst only a single sash moves on a single hung window.
To prevent movement and damage, the window sash needs to be correctly installed and consistently maintained, otherwise ventilation is affected and leaks can occur. Our team are experts in installation and will advise you on how to look after your sash window and preserve its insulative properties.
