Should I get uPVC or aluminium sash windows?
This is up to personal preference as they both have their own benefits. uPVC sash windows are insulating, so they will keep your home energy efficient. They are also durable, affordable, and need minimal upkeep.
Although similarly insulative, aluminium is slimmer and costlier. That being said, because aluminium is also more durable than uPVC, the overall cost of aluminium windows may end up being the same (if not lower) as that of uPVC windows, as aluminium windows will last longer.
How do sliding sash windows work?
Sliding sash windows consist of two panels. One (if single-hung) or both (if double-hung) panels can move vertically to open and close the window.
When a sliding sash window is open, the glass in the panel stays in the same position as it works using a pulley system. One of the windows is at the end of the cord, and the other end includes a counterweight. This prevents the window from shutting when the sash is released.
How should I measure my sash window?
Width: measure laterally from one side to the other while remaining within the box frame. Don’t take into account the width of the box within which the window is situated.
Height: Take into account both of the sashes when measuring from top to bottom. Measure within the box frame to ensure that your numbers are accurate.
Box frame height: start at the top of the window frame and measure down toward the windowsill.
Box frame width: this includes the whole frame of the window.
How can I tell which part of the window is a sash?
It’s the part of the window that sits within the frame and retains the glazed panes so that they’re held together. The type of window you’ve chosen will influence the sash. If you have a double-hung design with two sashes, both will move. If you have a single-hung version, just the one sash will move.
