An orangery can add style and luxury to any property. In years gone by, orangeries were used in large country estates to grow exotic shrubs and trees as a status symbol. However, they have since evolved to suit any home and budget.
Today, the most sophisticated home extensions consider orangeries to create a bright new living space to relax and socialise in. Although an orangery may seem similar to a conservatory there are a few differences. The main benefit of an orangery over a conservatory is the dwarf walls which run along the edge of the building and the semi-solid roof. This gives an orangery more structure than a conservatory whilst still having large glass windows to let as much natural light in as possible and the option for large patio doors.
Adding an orangery to your home is a great way to add space and value to your house, whilst keeping costs lower than a new extension. More robust than a regular conservatory, a new orangery will be a place to relax in for years to come.
Here at CTG, our patented unique designs mean we can provide you with the perfect orangery for your home. Whatever your taste and style we can help you find the right fit for you. We offer a range of features, colours and styles to choose from when designing your orangery.

What is an orangery?
Similar to a conservatory, an orangery is an extension to your home that is made predominantly of glass. As well as the glazing, however, an orangery also has dwarf walls running around the bottom, pillars, and a semi-solid roof. Traditionally, upper-class families built orangeries to be able to grow exotic citrus plants that otherwise wouldn’t have survived the bitter British winter, and the construction became a glamorous status symbol. Nowadays, anyone can have an orangery; have a look at our brochure to have a look at some examples and to see whether one would be right for your home.
What’s the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
The main difference between the two is the amount of glass used in the construction. Most often, a conservatory is made exclusively of glass panels, from the roof to the floor. This lets in sunlight from all angles, at all times of the day and is a wonderful, bright space with panoramic views of the garden.
An orangery, on the other hand, has some brickwork that gives it a sturdier feel. This includes dwarf walls running around the bottom, and pillars to hold up a semi-solid roof. This means that you get lots of natural light, but it is more thermally efficient, In fact, an orangery looks and feels more like a full extension than a conservatory, but you still don’t lose the beautiful views of the garden or the brightness of a conservatory. Choosing between them is a completely personal choice; why not pop into our showroom to have a look at the difference between the two?
Is an orangery warmer than a conservatory?
An orangery has less glass and more brickwork, which means, in general, less heat escapes and it stays warmer in cold weather. This will always depend on the materials used though. A single-glazed orangery with old fixtures and fittings will be significantly colder than a modern conservatory with double glazing and compression-seal windows and doors. At CTG, we use A+ rated double glazing as standard so you can stay warm in your conservatory or orangery whatever the weather.
Is an orangery cheaper than an extension?
An orangery is always cheaper than a full extension, as it requires fewer materials. You still get a semi-solid roof, dwarf walls and lots of natural light, but without the builder’s price tag. Because it has a more solid structure, it is more expensive than a standard conservatory, but gives you a bright, open space that can be used all year round. Take a look at our brochure to work out which one would work best for you and your space.
