Are French doors always double?
If you choose to get French doors in your home, we will install two doors in the same frame. This means that when you open the two doors, you have a large, unobstructed space out to your garden, rather than having to separate doors with a pillar between them. You can choose to open one door for quick access outside, or both doors for maximum ventilation.
At CTG, we almost always sell our French doors as double, but if you only have room for one door, then contact us and we can see what we can do in your space.
What is the difference between patio doors and French doors?
French doors are made up of two doors inside a single frame that you can open inwards or outwards, whilst patio doors tend to be sliding doors featuring one or a pair of sliding panels. Both designs have a great reputation for being suited to opening out into outside space such as your patio or garden. French doors offer good ventilation and provide more space to use though it’s important to factor in how much of your inside living space they will take up. Patio doors are especially suitable if you have limited space, as the doors remain inside the frame.
Do French doors swing in or out?
How you would like your doors to open is up to you, depending on your personal preference and the space you have. Inward-opening doors take up some inside space but may be preferable if they would otherwise be blocking parts of your garden you need access to. Outward-opening doors, on the other hand, preserve more of your inside space and we can offer modern tension hinges which make sure your doors don’t slam in the wind.
Why is it called a French door?
As the name suggests, French doors were first made popular in France, having been influenced by designs originating in Greece and Italy during the Renaissance period. During this period, there was a strong focus on bringing more natural light into buildings and this is reflected by the large glass doors that make up the design of French doors. French doors were frequently used as doors to lead out to balconies and quickly gained popularity across Western Europe. They’re now synonymous with elegance and timelessness and provide a seamless link between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Do I need planning permission for French doors?
In the case of French doors at the rear of a property that doesn’t face a road, you don’t require planning permission, whether you’re creating a bigger opening for the doors or replacing the same opening. Remember that if you live in a conservation area or a listed building, you may face restrictions. As CTG is certified with CERTASS, we can ensure your new doors are in line with the relevant regulations.
Do French doors increase home value?
Extending an opening to install a French door in place of standard doors can add value to your property. As they’re made almost completely out of glass, French doors accentuate the amount of light that comes into your home and in turn, give the impression of larger and more open-plan space. French doors are also favoured by many people as they offer the possibility of blending your garden or patio together with your inside space – great during the warmer months. Here at Britannia, we use only the most durable and high-quality materials. Our French doors will provide a stunning aesthetic result, without any compromise on security or thermal efficiency.
