Are composite doors good?

Choosing composite doors is a viable investment for your home, made to your personal specifications and offering security and thermal efficiency.

The fact that composite doors are made in a high-pressure and high-heat environment makes them hardy, long-lasting and resistant to the elements, like wind, rain and snow. Composite doors are one of the most durable styles available.

Save money on your energy bills, as composite doors have been proven to be more energy-efficient than their uPVC counterparts. With the option of choosing your preferred colour texture and design, it’s never been easier to find what you’re looking for.

Are composite doors cheaper than uPVC?

Because they’re slimmer, uPVC doors require fewer materials, have a simpler manufacturing process and are less costly than composite doors. That doesn’t mean this should be the principal focus when considering your overall expenditure. Our uPVC doors are also durable and energy-efficient, and they have many more glazing options than our composite doors.

It’s true that uPVC doors are the more cost-effective answer in the short term, but composite doors are more enduring and energy efficient overall.

What is the best material for a front door?

Wooden doors – wooden doors can give a timeless look to any home and can be adjusted to doorways of all sizes and shapes, though they can be more susceptible to weather damage than other door styles. This means they can need more looking after if you want to maintain their appearance.

Composite doors –  composite doors keep your energy bills low because of the high level of insulation they can offer. They’re an amalgamation of various materials including fibreglass and foam and ensure durability and security.

uPVC doors – made from highly resistant materials, these doors are a popular choice as they balance high performance with a great price. At CTG, we offer a wide range of colour, finish and glazing options for you to choose from.

How long should a composite door last?

With proper maintenance, a composite door can last a lifetime. We use 100% CFC-free polyurethane foam in our composite doors which is water-resistant and very thermally efficient. Other composite doors have a timber core, but we found that this is prone to warping if it gets damp.

All our composite doors come with a 10-year guarantee, but with the right care, they can last decades. Just wipe your door down to remove dirt and oil your hinges once a year; read our repairs and maintenance page for more details.

What does a composite door mean?

Composite doors are made from various materials, as the term ‘composite’ suggests. The fact that they aren’t made from one single material means they’re a more durable option.

Our composite doors have a 100% CFC-free foam core, which is extremely strong and a great insulator. Other composite doors have a timber core, which is also very strong, but we found that they have a tendency to warp if any dampness gets into the door. Designed for strength and durability, our composite doors will keep you safe for decades.

What should I look for when buying a front door?

When choosing a front door, it’s important to decide on the aspects you wish to prioritise. If aesthetic is most important to you, wooden doors give a classic and smart appearance. In the case of composite doors, many colours and style designs are available to choose from.

Remember to consider both long and short term costs. uPVC-style doors may cost less to buy outright but won’t be as durable as composite doors, but we do have a wide variety of glazing and colour options if you want to add some personality to your home.
